What makes silica gel so special is the fact that, in addition to its soothing effect on burning and itching sensation, it has an unusually high ability to bond water and secretions from wounds. This means that the secretions from the herpes bubbles on the lips bind to the gel and that the blisters dry out systematically. In this way, the spread of the virus is reduced and the healing process is accelerated. When the gel dries, sometimes the formation of a white surface occurs.
