What babytol D3+K1 contains

Vitamin D3 is a "vitamin of the sun". It is recommended at a daily dose of 400 IJ from the 8th day of life, as it is extremely important for the proper growth of bones and teeth. Vitamin D3 deficiency can cause bone brittleness, demineralization and brittle bones, i.e. a disease called rickets.

Vitamin K1 is also called "vitamin coagulation". It is recommended to use 25 mcg per day, from day 8 to the end of the third month after birth, as it is extremely important for the synthesis of coagulation factors and the healthy blood system of the baby. Due to its lack of bleeding, bleeding may occur. Bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency in infant period is called hemorrhagic disease of the newborn (HBN) or according to today's nomenclature bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency (KZNKV).

Why is every newborn at risk for developing bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency?

  • poor transition of vitamin K in pregnancy via the placenta to the fruit (in the liver of the fruit the concentration of vitamin K is only 5 to 25 % concentration in the mother)

  • low concentrations of vitamin K in breast milk (4-10 times lower concentration of vitamin K in breast milk compared to cow's milk and factory substitutes for infant milk)

  • insufficient production of vitamin K in the intestinal bacterial flora of the newborn (only at the age of 14 days is the amount of bacteria of the intestinal flora equal to that of the later infant age)

HBN prevention in the Republic of Croatia

  • all newborns should be given from 0.5 to 1 mg of vitamin K1 single intramuscular directly (from 1 to 2 hours) after birth

  • from the 8th day of life to the age of 12 weeks get 25 μg of vitamin K1 and 400 IJ of vitamin D3 orally once a day.

  • In case of cholestasis and cystic fibrosis, the doses of vitamin K must be higher, in accordance with the recommendations for the treatment of each of these diseases.

  • Infants fed infant formulae milk (2 or more complete meals) should be given vitamin K1 prophylaxis after birth and do not require oral prophylactic use of vitamin K in the infant period afterwards.
